Titan Track Bulletin - March 28, 2011
THANKS and GREAT WORK SO FAR
A big thanks from the coaches to all of you who are working hard to become the best you can possibly be. It’s a real pleasure to see so many staying late and seeking additional help so they can improve. Seeing someone throw farther, jump higher or run faster (how about Shay Sifuentes going from 7:28 to 6:18 in only two weeks) as a result of hard work is very, very satisfying to everyone involved in the program.
Also, a HUGE thanks to Aaron Hill, Kuyler Thompson and Derek Gann for helping in so many ways. It’s really great to see these guys out in the 35 degree weather at 6:00 still coaching and shagging throws, helping throwers reach their goals. And of course, thanks to Coaches Jones, Knight, Wilcox and Berrong for their dedication, hard work, and support.
There are many great things happening in the Titan Track and Field program- most of these great things will never score a point in a meet. But they will make for some great memories and provide some real life learning experiences.
SUPER MEET
The Titans fared well against 11 of the top teams in Utah and Wyoming last week. The Girls finished 4th, just eight points out of 2nd, and the Boys were 3rd, a mere two points from 2nd.
Lindsey McFarland was the only individual winner for the Girls as she captured the 400m dash in 59.27, a state qualifying mark. She also placed 7th in the 200m dash. Mayra Franco also qualified for state as she finished 2nd in the 100m dash in 12.75. She was also 3rd in the 200m dash. Ali Morris had a good meet finishing 3rd in the 100m hurdles (16.03) and 3rd in the long jump (15'05). Mary Pauni picked up a 3rd place finish in the shot put with a PR toss of 34'05. Also scoring for the Lady Titans were Rylee Garver (6th 300m hurdles, 51.16), Sharlie Dimick (7th, 1600m run, 5:37), and Takenna Hamblin (7th, 800m run, 2:38.7).
The Boys were led by Hunter Naisbitt’s two first place finishes. He won the shot put (53'08) and discus (163'11). Both are state qualifying marks and his discus throw was named the meet’s Outstanding Performance. Zach Watson placed 2nd in the pole vault clearing 13'06 to tie his school record and qualify for state. Cory Serfoss won the long jump with a leap of 21'11", a school record and state qualifying mark. Jamison Nielson was busy placing 2nd in the high jump (6'00), 2nd in the 110m hurdles (16.06) and 5th in the 300m hurdles (43.09). Preston Williams ran 1:59.49 to finish 2nd in the 800m run and Jaxon Hansen’s 4:36.04 was good enough to place 3rd. Chris Brown picked up a 3rd place finish in the 400m dash in 51.45 and was 7th in the 100m dash (11.84). Others scoring for the Boys included Hunter Dimick (5th shot put, 44'11"), Jake Zaugg (7th pole vault, 11'00), Spencer Hull (8th shot put, 41'01"), Shane Russell (6th 300m hurdles, 43.17), and Mike Russell (6th 400m dash, 54,66).
It was a good meet to see how we stacked up against the top kids in the state. It showed that with some commitment and hard work, the Titans can be very competitive before the season is over.
I’ve attached updated results of the meet.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the Athletes of the Week were Mayra Franco and Hunter Naisbitt. Mayra not only qualified for state in the 100m dash, but defeated many of the top sprinters in the state in the process. Hunter’s winning the Outstanding Performance award at the Super Meet and qualifying for state in two events was huge.
