STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
A pretty incredible year for the Titan Track team (not capitalized- see below) came to an end Friday and Saturday at the State Championships held at BYU. The two days seemed to be a microcosm of the entire season: some bad weather, some terrible weather, a little good weather; some good performances, some great performances, some disappointments. Let’s hope that the disappointments some felt will be negated by the overall picture of some great things that happened over the course of the season or the three years of involvement in the program. There were some incredible things that have taken place over the season and also over the last three years. And some incredible things that happened at State!
In team scoring, the Girls finished in 8th place while the Boys were 5th. In combined scoring, the Titans finished 6th- not bad considering all of the injuries that were hard to overcome.
Mayra Franco capped off a great senior year placing 3rd in the 100m dash (12.37) and 4th in the 200m dash (25.77). She also ran a great anchor leg on the 4x100m relay with Rylee Garver, Lizzie Reich and Shelby Cadwell as they ran 49.25 to finish 4th. This was our fastest of the season by over one-second. And at just the right time. Lindsey McFarland’s 58.37 in the 400m dash was good enough to place 7th. She placed in the top-8 all three years at State. That’s a very tough thing to do and a great accomplishment. Lindsey, Rylee, Shelby and Lindsey Bailey ran great to finish 6th in the 4x400m relay in 4:05.21. Rylee ran 47.15, just off her PR, to make finals in the 300m hurdles. She just missed scoring as she ran 47.25 in the finals. Two very good races. April Basinger’s 107'02 toss in the javelin was good enough for 6th place. She had a slight foul that may have won it. Mary Pauni threw 35'08 to place 6th in the shot put. Abby Call made finals throwing 32'11. Ali Morris ran a courageous race to make the finals in the 100m hurdles. Her stress fracture then took it’s toll as she limped to the finish in the finals.
In the Boys action, Hunter Naisbitt won both the shot put (55'08) and discus (160'00) throws. He finished an incredible year winning all but one event over the entire season, the loss by ½" in the shot put at the BYU Invitational. Shane Russell picked the right time to PR as his 15.31 placed 4th in the 110m hurdles. Jamison Nielson’s 15.62 was good enough for 7th in the event. Preston Williams’ 1:55.90 PR in the 800m run put him in the third spot. He ran a perfect race to accomplish the top finish. His 4:26.50 just missed scoring as he placed 9th in the 1600m run. Zach Watson’s 13'00 was good enough for 8th in the pole vault, not quite what he had hoped for. After the initial disappointment, he helped Jake Zaugg to a 9" PR in clearing 13'09" to place 5th. Michael Phelps, Jonah Lewis, Chris Brown and Jaxon Hansen ran 3:36.42 to place 4th in the medley relay. Chris, Jaxon, Preston and Cory Serfoss teamed up to run 3:23.23 to place 3rd in the 4x400m relay.
While many goals were not reached throughout the meet and the season, there was one thing that typified the State meet: every competitor gave 100% efforts to help the team and to try to reach their goals. A big thanks to those who made the journey down both days to support even though they weren’t competing.
ACADEMIC ALL-STATE
Congratulations to April Basinger and Preston Williams on their selection to the 5A Academic All-State Team. 4.0 is hard to beat!!
JUNIOR HIGH CHAMPIONSHIPS
Great job by all who helped make the meet a success. It was an incredible effort by many to pull the meet off in such terrible conditions. There were several emails from the coaches that complimented you for your great efforts under about the worst conditions one could imagine for a meet. You pulled it off!!
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
The Athletes of the Week were based more on what they have done over the course of the season- and what they would have done at Sophomore/JV Region. Those chosen were: Nicole Lavely, Shay Sifuentes, Parker Greenhalgh, and Landon Greenhalgh.
UNIFORMS
Avoid the fine list by turning in your uniforms after school Wednesday, May 25th. Bring them to Room 2118 immediately after school.
CROSS COUNTRY
The meeting to hand out summer training and racing schedules will be held Wednesday, May 25th in Room 2604. It will begin at about 3:30. This will give you time to turn in your uniforms and give Jr. High students a chance to get to the school.
TITAN DECATHLON
The Titan Decathlon is tentatively set for Thursday and Friday, May 26/27. Let’s see who the best all-around athlete is. Open to ALL members of the team. Including the Ladies.
BARBECUE / AWARDS
