“EYES ON THE PRIZE”
In the 1980's, PBS broadcast an epic documentary titled “Eyes on the Prize”. It detailed the civil rights movement of African-Americans in the U.S. following the abolition of slavery until the 1980's. Their “prize” was simply the equal rights as promised to all in our constitution. I’d like to use that title as our slogan over the next five weeks as we head towards the conclusion of the season. Our “prize” or goal would be a couple State titles. That may seem like an unattainable goal, but in viewing results of big meets so far this year, there are only 4-5 schools with realistic chances of taking home the gold trophies. I believe we are one of those schools. Talent-wise, we will not be the favorites. How could the Titans ever attain the goal? By EVERYONE keeping their “Eyes on the Prize”. That means working harder and smarter than every other team. That means being more dedicated (getting to practice, getting there on time) than the other contenders. It means being more self-disciplined, i.e. eating right, getting proper sleep, preventing and/or taking care of injuries. It also means being disciplined in all areas of your life. Getting to class on time, keeping on top of your grades, following the Code of Conduct, etc.. This discipline will carry over to the workouts and meets. If EVERYONE, from the coaches and “stars” to the athlete ranked last in their event, gets on board, and if we all keep our “Eyes on the Prize”, it will be a great way to end the season no matter what the outcome. And it will be much easier for us to keep our Eyes on the Prize than the civil rights pioneers- we don’t have to battle fire hoses or attack dogs!!
CLEARFIELD/FREMONT TRI-MEET
The Titans picked up a couple big wins over region rivals Wednesday at Clearfield. The windy conditions hampered the performances somewhat, but not the competitiveness of the Titans. The Girls finished with 98 points to outdistance Fremont (48) and Clearfield (12). The Boys wound up with 103 points to Fremont’s 37 and Clearfield’s 34.
Picking up victories for the Girls Cambria Bitter (high jump, 4'07), Mary Pauni (shot put, 34'07), April Basinger (javelin, 102'07), Ali Morris (100m hurdles, 16.46), Rylee Garver (300m hurdles, 49.42), Mayra Franco (100m dash, 12.48), Lindsey McFarland (800m run, 2:34.0), Sharlie Dimick (1600m run, 5:45.0) and Daylyn Johnston (3200m run, 13:15.0). Ali, Rylee, Mayra and Shelby Cadwell teamed up to win the 4x100m relay in 52.11. Lindsey McFarland, Maddie Cook, Ashley Rodriguez and Erin Kibler won the medley relay. Sharlie, Rylee, Shelby Cadwell and Lindsey Bailey picked up a victory in the 4x400m relay.
Winners in the Boys’ competition included Zach Watson (pole vault, 13'06), Hunter Naisbitt (shot put, 50'07 and discus, 145'02), Shane Russell (javelin, 124'07), Jamison Nielson (110m hurdles, 15.76), Chris Brown (300m hurdles, 45.05), Jaxon Hansen (400m dash, 52.70), Mike Russell (800m run, 2:08), and Brandon Yardley (1600m, 4:57.0 and 3200m, 11:09). Jaxon, Preston Williams and Gus Salazar won the medley relay, and Jaxon, Preston, Kolton Rackham and Cory Serfoss picked up a win in the 4x400m relay.
GRIZZLY INVITE- HUGE EFFORTS!!
As has been the usual case this spring, the Titans battled the weather at the Grizzly Invitational in Logan Saturday. But WE defeated the weather and came home with some great results. With 25 teams from Utah, Idaho and Wyoming competing, the Lady Titans came back with the TEAM title. They tallied 87.25 points to Sky View’s 74. (71.25 to 56 if scoring only the normal events). The Boys were 2nd to Sky View (103.35-112), but would have won 91.35 to 80 when scoring only the normal events. If I would have known they were scoring the "steeplechase", I would have put Coaches Berrong and Wilcox in the event. No matter how the meet was scored, it was a great day for the Titans.
Mayra Franco won the 100m dash in 12.20. That is not only a school record, but the 2nd fastest time run in Utah this year. She also placed 4th in the 200 (26.60) and 6th in the long jump (15'11). Lindsey McFarland was 4th in the 400m dash (1:00.01). Sharlie Dimick ran a great 3200m run to place 5th in 12:02.0. Ali Morris had a big day finishing 3rd in the long jump (16'03, a state qualifying mark), 5th in the 100m hurdles (16.14) and 2nd in the triple jump (30'09). Her long jump effort came in probably the worst weather conditions of the day. Rylee Garver ran a great 300m hurdles- alone in a slower heat- to finish 2nd in 47.91. April Basinger threw a school record and state qualifying mark of 112'07 to place 2nd in the javelin. She also finished 8th in the discus at 90'04. Mary Pauni qualified for state in the shot put with a big PR throw of 35'04 to place 6th. Maddie Cook, Lauren Garrett, Lindsey Garrett and Daylyn Johnston placed 3rd in the medley relay running 4:41.15. Erin Kibler, Katelyn Davidson, Shay Sifuentes and Cheyna Field ran 11:51.7 to place 6th in the 4x800m relay. Rylee Garver, Takenna Hamblin, Shelby Cadwell and Lindsey McFarland ran 4:14.49 to place 3rd in the 4x400m relay.
For the Boys, Hunter Naisbitt was amazing. His winning throw of 178'11 in the discus is the #10 mark in Utah history and ranks in the top-30 nationally. He also won the shot put at 55'01. AJ Wilcox had an amazing 4' PR in the shot throwing 49'11 to place 4th. Brad Sherman also had a big (28') PR throwing 138'03 to finish 4th in the discus. Jake Zaugg cleared 12' in super-bad conditions to place 2nd in the pole vault. Kyle Arigot’s 9'06 gave him 7th place. Jaxon Worthen’s 5'09 in the high jump put him in a tie for 6th. Cory Serfoss won the long jump with a leap of 21'09 in less than ideal conditions. Chris Brown placed 4th in the 400m dash in 51.77. Preston Williams ran a fantastic race in winning the 800m run in 1:58.13 to qualify for state. Jaxon Hansen’s 4:39.5 was good enough to place 6th in the 1600m run. Shane Russell’s PR of 16.15 placed 7th in the 110m hurdles. The 4x400m relay team of Cory Serfoss, Jaxon Hansen, Preston Williams and Chris Brown won the 4x400m relay in 3:26.61, a state qualifying mark. Cory, Chris, Jaxon and Jonah Lewis won the medley relay in 3:44.21. Dylan Rossmango, Brayden Ryan, Allen Miller and Brandon Yardley placed 3rd in the 4x800m relay running 9:08.60. While this account just highlights the scoring performances, there were many more that were equally impressive. Big PR’s by so many athletes. It was a great meet and a great way to spend a Saturday.
REGION RANKINGS
The rankings are posted at: http://www.regiononetrack.blogspot.com/. The top 24 in each event at the end of the regular season qualify to compete in the Region Championships. They will probably not be updated until Monday night- I have to wait on all schools to send in their rankings.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected this week were Rylee Garver, Ali Morris, Cory Serfoss and Bradley Sherman. Rylee and Brad’s hard work is paying big dividends with huge PR’s. Cory continues to dominate the long jump and run great relay legs. And Ali continues to improve every week because of her work ethic.
