Titan Track Bulletin - April 3, 2011
DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
This meet was a huge success for the Titan Track and Field program in many ways. The 2nd place TEAM finishes and individual accomplishments were very impressive. Even more impressive, however, was the commitment and involvement of so many athletes, parents and coaches that showed we are moving in the right direction in trying to build a total program that will be viewed as one of the elite programs in the state. Thanks to everyone that helped, as officials, setting up, selling concessions, sponsoring events, etc. A special thanks to Tara Hamblin for organizing the concessions. The feedback from athletes and coaches was very positive concerning all aspects of the meet.
The Girls had two individual winners in April Basinger and Lindsey McFarland. April won the javelin in a school record toss of 106'01". This just missed the state qualifying mark. She also finished 7th in the discus (80'03). Lindsey won the 400m dash for the 3rd straight year. Her winning time was 1:00.13. She also placed 5th in the 200m dash (27.75). Mayra Franco had a very good meet finishing 2nd in the 100m dash (12.90) and 200m dash (26.44). Sharlie Dimick was busy placing 2nd in the 3200m run (12:17.7), 5th in the 800m run (2:29.40) and 5th in the 1600m run (5:34.28). Mary Pauni picked up 3rd place finishes in the shot put (34'09) and discus (88'00). Sarah Sperry cleared 5'00 in the high jump to place 2nd, tie the school record, and qualify for state. A big WOW and a huge accomplishment. Cambria Bitter and Jaycie Smith cleared 4'06 to place 6th and 8th. Ali Morris’ 15'09 in the long jump was good enough to finish 4th. Picking up 8th place points were Takenna Hamblin (800m run, 2:33.11) and Daylyn Johnston (3200m run, 13:01.6). Lindsey, Shelby Cadwell, Rylee Garver and Lindsey Bailey ran a fast 4:18.5 to finish 2nd in the 4x400m relay. Katie Duncan, Amber Gates, Shelby and Daylyn ran 4:45.3 to place 5th in the medley relay. Mayra, Shelby, Rylee and Ali ran 53.37 to place 4th in the 4x100m relay.
The Boys were led by meet MVP Hunter Naisbitt. He won the shot put in a school record and state-leading throw of 55'08.50 to go along with his victory in the discus with a toss of 156'09. That also leads the state. He also placed 7th in the javelin (127'10). Cory Serfoss’ 21'11" winning leap in the long jump was selected as the Outstanding Performance of the Meet. Zach Watson tied his school record in the pole vault clearing 13'06 to place 2nd. Jacob Zaugg was 4th at 12'00. Jamison Nielson scored big points in the high jump (2nd, 6'00), 110m hurdles (1st, 15.94) and 300m hurdles (4th, 42.24). Shane Russell was 8th in the 110m hurdles and 6th in the 300m hurdles (42.29). Chris Brown won the 400m dash (51.63) and was 7th in the 100m dash (11.85). Michael Phelps was 8th in the 100 in 11.87. Mike Russell (54.49) and Jake Garver (55.82) were 5th and 6th in the 400m dash. Preston Williams and Jaxon Hansen had big days in the distance races. Preston finished 2nd in the 1600m run (4:30.72) and 800m run (2:03.2). Jaxon was 4th in the 1600m run (4:34.2), 5th in the 800m run (2:04.9) and 6th in the 3200m run (10:13.3). Hunter Dimick (44'00) and A.J. Wilcox (43'01) placed 6th and 8th in the shot put. Chris, Cory, Preston and Jaxon won the 4x400m relay in 3:28.97, just missing the state qualifying mark. Jeff Knighton, Tanner Jolliffe, Zach Watson and Dylan Rossmango placed 4th in the medley relay at 3:53.99. The 4x100m relay of Shane, Jamison, Michael and Taylor Carlson finished 5th in the 4x100m relay.
There were several great performances that didn’t quite make the top eight. The lady hurdlers (Ali, Cambria, Rylee, Shelby, Amber, Kenzie, Sam, Ashley, etc.) are getting very close to being forces on a region and state level as are some new throwers. Sarah Sperry, Abby Call and Ashley Perczak were just out of the medals. Laura Yacks just missed scoring in the javelin. There are many other Lady Titans that just keep working hard and PR’ing. Seeing the huge improvements from Kiersten, Shay, Erin, Paige, Katelynn, Cheyna, Katie, Maddie, and many others, is cause for excitement for the last few weeks.
The Men’s throwers are improving big time. A 6' PR in the shot put by AJ Wilcox is just one example of what can happen with a little work. With extra time being put in by people like Wade Rasmussen, Bradley Sherman, Spencer Hull, Steven Carter, Corey Cook, Jarom Hansen, Keaton Jones, etc., we should be scoring big points later in the year in the throws. Our new hurdlers are starting to drop their times. Rookies in the 400 like Garver and Russell, distance kids like Weston Atkins, Brandon Yardley, Dylan Rossmango, Connor Vickers, Andrew Skidmore, Spencer Griffin, Frank Owens are rounding into shape. When we find the right events for Jonah Lewis, Taylor Carlson, the Greenhalgh’s, Cameron Dower, Gus Salazar, Jaxon Worthen, Jace Skidmore, Matt Dunston, Tanner Jolliffe, Allen Miller, Landon Ostler, Brayden Ryan, and many others, we will be much stronger as a TEAM.
Recovering from injuries will be key to our success. When Taylee, Tom, Cory, Nick, Weston, Lizzy and others are 100%, it will make a huge difference.
Bottom line: We are a good TEAM. We can be a much better TEAM. We can even contend for State titles. But we need to train harder and be smarter than our competition. We can’t control how hard or how smart our competition trains. We can control how hard and how smart the Titans do. This includes all aspects of becoming better prepared to compete: training, nutrition, sleep, education (studying your event), etc. Let’s make sure there are no regrets at the end of the season.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the Athletes of the Week were Lindsey McFarland, April Basinger, and Preston Williams, Zach Watson. Lindsey- three straight district titles in the 400 is amazing. April’s school record in the jav and continued improvement in the discus is really going to help our chances at Region and State. Preston’s big points, great times and leadership are a big key to our success. Zach continues to score big points and is always up to the challenge of trying new events.

ALUMNI UPDATE
Jake Rossmango ran 10:09 for the steeplechase Saturday. That is a good time, but not what he had hoped for. He will get faster. Hannah Willaims ran a great time of 4:42.44 for the 1500 meter run to place 2nd at the New Mexico Invitational. Over 25 were in the race. McKayla Williams ran 2:21 for the 800.
